Improved field measurements for Styrofoam and Plexiglas cages and a microwave exposure array previously designed and constructed at AFRRI are described. A new miniature isotropic electric field probe designed by the Bureau of Radiological Health was used. The new measurements demonstrated the effectiveness of the cages for microwave research. The microwave exposure array was shown to provide equal average power density to all exposed animals to within + or - 5 percent.

The effects of standing waves in the region between the feed horn and subdish of a Cassegrain antenna are examined experimentally. Evaluation of the experimental results indicate the existence of a resonator in this region which makes calibration of the Cassegrain antenna necessary in order to determine the influence of the resonator on a signal which is transmitted or received. It has been established that the radiation pattern characteristics are profoundly influenced by the location of the...

Unrestricted Warfare is neither a revolution in military thought nor an executable doctrine for future warfare, but a collection of tactics, techniques, and procedures that have been used throughout history and will continue to be used by future adversaries. In February 1999, two Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) senior Air Force colonels, Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui, published Unrestricted Warfare. This paper critically analyzes the concept of Unrestricted Warfare as it relates to future...

Visual is the key sensory mode by which a pilot receives the vast majority of the information required to successfully fly the aircraft and accomplish his mission. Visual information is received both directly (viewing through the windscreen, heads-up display and visor) and indirectly (viewing instruments, graphics displays and imaging displays) in a continuous stream. The ability of the pilot to perceive, assimilate and act on this vast amount of visual information greatly depends on the...

A recent advancement in cast aluminum alloys has demonstrated that complex shapes can be cast from a microalloyed Al-Cu alloy in dry sand molds with chills and that these castings can be heat treated to produce mechanical and physical properties nearly comparable to wrought 2519 aluminum alloy. Given this initial level of success, further research has been focused on improving this microalloyed Al-Cu alloy so that the mechanical properties consistently meet or exceed those of wrought 2519...

The title of this volume, The Lessons of History: The Chinese People's Liberation Army at 75, captures well the overall theme of the twelve chapters that follow. The primary focus is not on summarizing the lessons that analysts or scholars from outside China have learned when they look back at the past three-quarters of a century of Chinese military history. Rather, the emphasis of this volume is to assess key lessons that the top ranks of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) have drawn from...

Aircraft performance, in its most general sense configuration, can be defined as the flight achievements an aircraft must execute for successful mission accomplishment. Obviously, expected performance parameters must be an integral part of the design process of an aircraft. Given certain performance expectations by the customer, the designer must make decisions regarding wing loading, power plant selection, airfoil selection, planform configuration, and myriad other considerations. All of these...

As with all military thought, a wide variety of political, historical, and economic factors guided the development of air doctrines in the period between the First and Second World Wars. Yet standing above all other influences was a revulsion against the mud and despair of the trenches. Thus, it is not surprising that an Italian senior officer, Giulio Douhet, would argue that airpower could prevent the repetition of a war that had cost Italy more than 400,000 dead. In terms of the first...

For decades, the United States has had massive and uncontested nuclear superiority over China. That may slowly be changing. Although it is unlikely that China will seek to sprint to parity in the near term, the United States progressively is reducing its nuclear forces while China slowly is expanding its own. Early in 2006, the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) requested that the Department of Defense (DoD) provide: an official compilation of locations and dates outside of Vietnam where the Department used herbicide agents, including Agent Orange, as well as locations and dates where DoD personnel were likely exposed to these agents. The intent of this request was to obtain information that may be important in evaluating the merits of many veterans' disability claims. Various estimates have...

This report summarizes the results of a two-year study of atmospheric infrared 'continuum' absorption attributed to intermolecularly bonded clusters in water vapor. Spectral data are reviewed for water vapor, steam and liquid water. The infrared continuum absorption is discussed in detail and is shown to be explicable on the basis of homogeneous or ion-induced cluster distributions in water vapor, where the cluster population is approximately proportional to the square of the partial water...

A Short History of War offers the reader a brief, but relatively comprehensive overview of the forces that have shaped the development of armies, weapons, and war throughout the ages. Its broad thematic approach conveys that sens of historical context within which soldiers have had to act over the millennia. The reader will immediately recognize that there is little ne the current debates over force structure, weapons, tactics, and operational skills that has not gone before. The reader will...

The COMbat Wear integration (COMWIN) antenna is currently being developed by Dr. Richard Adams of SPAWAR Systems Center, San Diego (Adams et al., 1999, Adams et al., 2000; Adams et al,. 2001; and Adams et al., 2002). The antenna would replace the whip antenna on man portable radios with a vest partially composed of a conductive fabric. The vest would make it more difficult for adversaries to locate and identify radio operators and would not interfere with operator's movement in the way...

Although the history and present state of the Chinese Communist military forces are not as well covered as those of the Soviet Union, nevertheless, there is a relatively large number of books, articles, and source collections available in English. Then why this study. The answer is simply that this is an attempt to tell the story of the Chinese Red Army in as concise a form as possible without compressing the narrative to the point of distortion. The study may seem overstuffed with facts, or...

While Chinese leaders continue to tout the clarity of China's strategic intentions, China's pursuit of advanced military capabilities, including anti-access and force projection, offers a different perception. China has prospered while the United States has been engulfed in Afghanistan and Iraq, America's longest wars to date. On the home front, the wars have inarguably contributed to an economic crisis and a divided nation. Meanwhile, China has experienced tremendous growth, not only...

Within the topic of true weather modification, there is a considerable diversity of issues, not the least of which is the dichotomy formed by military and civilian interests. Civilian programs are predominately agriculturally-oriented, while the military tends to be more interested in using weather for hostile purposes. While each group may use similar techniques and suffer the same problems of practicality and effect, the military purposes raise some thorny ethical questions which must also be...

This is the fourth in a series of reports on research at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. The report covers a two-year interval, as will succeeding reports in this unclassified series. This report was written primarily for Air Force and DoD managers of research development--and more specifically, for the managers in our Headquarters office, the Office of Aerospace Research. But it is hoped that it will be of interest and value to a much broader audience. To encompass this broader...
